The Medical University – Plovdiv, more popular until recently under the name of VMI (meaning Higher Medical Institute), was established in 1945. It includes the Faculties of Medicine, Dental medicine, and Health Care, a Medical College and a hospital of its own with a capacity of 2000 beds. All departments, considered as indispensable for higher medical education according to modern standards, are available - theoretical, pre-clinical and clinical, as well as laboratories, clinics and other units with modern equipment for diagnostics and treatment, research activities and training of medical and dental students. The Central University Library offers the students more than 170 000 volumes in field of medicine in many languages as well as an Internet hall and a local net system (with Medline and Micromedex available). The Medical University issues its own journal called Folia Medica, which is exchanged with more than 326 specialists from over 54 countries included in Medline. Every year over 3800 Bulgarian and foreign students are trained at
the Medical Uniresity - Plovdiv.
The teaching staff includes 134 specialists with academic degrees, and 601 assistant professors and other specialists. Type and length of courses: The duration of training for the major Medicine is 6 years (12 semesters altogether) and the Degree acquired is Master’s. For the major Dentistry - 5.5 years (11 semesters) , the degree is Master’s. For the major Health Care - 1year and 6 months for the full-time course and 2 years and 6 months for the part-time course, the degree acquired is Bachelor’s. St. Georgy University Hospital has excellent academic traditions for more than a century. It began in 1879, immediately after the liberation, as an ascendant of the first large hospital on the territory of South-Eastern Bulgaria, founded by the Red-Cross “St Panteleimon” organization. Later the hospital has been transformed to governmental but in the mind of the most population of the community it has the same status quo.
In 1945, the hospital has been fully-accredited as a Faculty hospital - a place for clinical education of medical students, studying at the University of Plovdiv. The traditions of excellence in patient care, education, research and community services has been built for years by highly skilled Bulgarian scientists. Later the hospital has expanded by renovating and building the second base (surgery), pharmacy building, laundry building, central heating unit and etc on 66 “Peshtersko shosse” str. in 1980.
The equipment used for health care delivery and education is up-to-date and has been bought from world famous medical device companies and financed by educational taxes of foreigners and the Government. |

The now-a-days St. Georgy University Hospital is an ascendant of the High Medical Institute Hospital - Plovdiv. In August 2000 the Ministry of Health has transformed the hospital to a trade corporation - privat shareholder corporation and has been licensed as a hospital in January 2001. The hospital is situated on two different territories - First Base (internal medicine mainly) on 15a “V. Aprilov” str. and Second Base (surgery mainly) on 66 “Peshtersko shosse” str. A 24 hours a day transport link connects the two bases for transporting patients and consultants. The hospital operates with 1258 beds and it’s overall - occupancy rate is of 80-90 percent. All patient rooms have TV set and private refreshing rooms. St. Georgy University Hospital is the main emergency center for patients, living on the territory of South-Eastern Bulgaria. The hospital is one of the National centers for organ and tissue donation.
